  1. Topical Working Group on Spacecraft, Launcher and Aircraft Environments November 6, 2007 Lippens Auditorium Prepared by Angélica Sicart

  2. Agenda • Progresses in the field : • - Services • - R&D activities • - Coordination • Future: • - Future ESA R&D activities • - EC • - Cosmic Vision • - SEENoTC • - Space based environment monitoring • - New programmes? • Comments and discussion

  3. Progresses in the field: European Space environment Services • SWENET– continuation supported by ESA. • GEISHA – continuation supported by CNES • MuSTAnG – In development (in preliminary operation). • SAAPS – running with low level of support. • SEIS – continuation at ESOC for s/c op support (SEISOP). • SESS – in development • SOARS – running • Sievert – supported by FCA (F). • QARM– supported by QQ (UK).

  4. Progresses in the field: R&D activities • ESA space situational awareness studies • ESA space weather modules study (in preparation). • ESA support to SWENET (maintenance). • ESA solar proton event modelling (SEPEM – workshop was held last December). • CNES/ONERA IPSAT (virtual observatory, goes, lanl, npoes) • CNES/CLS: solar flare prediction model. • CNES/ONERA: Salammbo developments. • EC: EGSO, SSVO, etc • Pic du Midi (2800-2900m) real-time testing facility:Christophe Sudre (INSEET, www.inseet.com, christophe.sudre@yahoo.fr) has put an experiment at "Pic du Midi" (France) for XiLinx in order to measure SEEs (65nm FPGA technology),at high altitude from neutrons (see RADECS - joel.lemauff@xilinx.com)

  5. Progresses in the field: Coordination • • SEENoTC: • – steering board met first time on 31/10/06. • – Technical Working Group established and met • • COSPAR • • COSPAR/PRBEM • • COSPAR/PSW • • Standards • ISO (space environment, testing of ESD on SA) • ECSS (E-20-06, E-10-04). • • COST • - COST 724 has been completed – Report will be available soon. • - The start of a new COST action is under discussion.

  6. Future: Forthcoming approved ESA R&D activities • MEO radiation environment models • Jupiter radiation environments and effects • Space Weather data systems • Shielding Tool (rapid prototyping toolkit) • Investigation and analysis of very high energy accelerators for radiation simulation • Development of a predictive discharge numerical model on solar panels • GEO-LEO radiation environment models • SSA

  7. Future: Possible future ESA TR&D activities • Physics models for bio. effects of rad. & shielding • Radiation shielding by ISRU and/or innovative composites for EVA, vehicles and habitats • Slot Region radiation environment • Highly miniaturized active MEO radiation monitor • Energetic electron shielding, charging & rad. effects • Dose enhancement in high electron environment as source of under-prediction • Highly miniaturized radiation monitoring • Reduction of margins in radiation analysis • Simplified MEO/GEO tools for spacecraft charging

  8. Future: EC activities • Space Weather is in FP7 for Space domain. • SOTERIA (Solar Terrestrial Investigations and Archives)- approved (cf G. Lapenta’s presentation. • Proposals in preparation.

  9. Future: Cosmic Vision • Cross-scale selected. • WARP not selected.
