Wellness Policies 2004 • Child Nutrition and WIC Reauthorization Act of 2004 • Requires LEA participating in the National School Lunch Program (NSLP) to establish a local school wellness policy by June 2006. • Important tool for parents, local education agencies (LEAs) and school districts to: • Promote student wellness • Prevent and reduce childhood obesity • Provide assurance that school meal nutrition guidelines meet the minimum federal school meal standards.

Action Steps for SHACs • Review memo on wellness policies. • Continue reviewing local wellness policies during School Year 2013-2014 and implementing new requirements.(Smarter Snacks) • Consult the resources on the Implementation Tools and Resources page. • Continue to inform and update the public about the content, implementation, and assessment of wellness policies.
