Ben GibbardDeath Cab and The Postal Service By: Jesse Frampton
On a bands genre, Ben Gibbard has said, "Some bands accused of being emo have gone so far as to go onstage and say 'We're not emo! This isn't emo! This is music!' and they just come off as more pretentious. You don't get to say what kind of music you make; that's what fans and writers do."
Style of Music and the influences behind it • Even though Ben has been quoted saying that he writes and plays pop songs because “that is what [they] are good at”, Death Cab for Cutie and a lot of his other music has been defined as Indie Rock. • Other styles that he as played or contributed to: Electropop, Indie Pop, alternative rock, and indietronica. Influences for his music • Bedhead • Red House Painters • American Analog Set • Neutral Milk Hotel • Built to Spill
Name of band came from a song by the 60’s band “Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band” that was preformed on the ‘magical mystrey tour’. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KGEyqP0744c (Title and Registration 00:24) Beginning of Death Cab for Cutie Began in Seattle at Western Washington U. Ben Gibbardand Chris Walla first teamed up to produce the first solo album of Gibbard, “You can play these songs with chords”. Which became a local hit. With the success of this album he teamed up with bassist Nick Harmer, drummer Nathan Good, and primary guitarist and producer Chris Walla. They then signed a contact with Barsuk Records with in the year. Death Cab for Cutie was formed.
Quote about writing music, “Well, it's almost like I don't have any control over it. I'm not really a super-prolific songwriter. I don't write a lot of songs, …I guess so far we have a decent amount of material, but I'd say I typically only write a song every month or month and a half. I've learned through the way I write not to push it. Things will come when they come and I'll know it, but I try not to feel like I have any control over it.”
Writing and meaning of songs • Quote about inspiration to writing a song after a divorce,“More times than not, when people think a song's about a certain thing, it's not. Because I want these songs to exist within the context of people's lives who are listening to them, I don't want to tell people what part of these songs are my own confessions about my life and the life of those around me. I think it kind of cheapens the purpose of writing a song in the first place –”
The Postal Service • Ben Gibbard and Jimmy Tamborello, who had been friends for sometime, decided to put an album together. Due to the distance between them, Tamborello, a producer, would write and perform the tracks, send them to Gibbard who added his vocals and would send them back. All of this being done through the United States Postal Service. • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mcs3wSzqTI8 (Nothing Better, 00:24) The Postal Service’s “Give Up” has been one of Gibbards albums outside of Death Cab for Cutie.
