  14. MUSIC Genre Project

  15. MUSIC GENRE/FORM PROJECT • Will include approximately 900 terms • Terms are mostly derived from LCSH with some new additions • Fill out thesaurus hierarchies • Reduce bias toward Western classical music • Art music • Genre/forms currently only present in subfield v • Studies and exercises • Will be part of the LC genre/form thesaurus (lcgft) • Will replace LCSH terms being used to identify a genre or form; subject terms will remain in LCSH • LC has given us a deadline of mid-November to complete the project

  16. Medium of performance project

  17. LCMPT now available! • LC officially launched Library of Congress Medium of Performance Thesaurus for Music (LCMPT) on February 24, 2014. • Approximately 800 terms. • Includes most of the medium terms currently in LCSH, as well as some new terms. • Can be used in authority and bibliographic records in the 382 field. • Eventually to be a replacement for the LCSH subject headings that include medium and are used as genre/form terms. • Generally singular, not capitalized.

  18. Hierarchy Overview mixed media mime signer voice visuals • ensemble audience instrumental ensemble mixed media vocal ensemble performer actor audience celebrant conductor dancer instrument

  19. Best Practices • The 382 portion of the DCM Z1 has been recently updated. • MLA is developing some provisional best practices for using LCMPT that will be out shortly. • Additions or changes to LCMPT should be submitted through the SACO Music Funnel.

  20. A few Examples • Medium of performance: alto saxophone, tenor saxophone, and baritone saxophone: • 382 01 $a alto saxophone $n 1 $a tenor saxophone $n 1 $a baritone saxophone $n 1 $s 3 $2 lcmpt • Medium of performance: alto voice and piano: • 382 01 $a alto voice $n 1 $a piano $n 1 $s 2 $2 lcmpt • Medium of performance: flute choir (piccolo, 4 flutes, alto flute, and bass flute): • 382 01 $a flute choir $2 lcmpt • AND/OR: • 382 01 $a piccolo $n 1 $a flute $n 4 $a alto flute $n 1 $a bass flute $n 1 $s 7 $2 lcmpt

  21. Next Steps

  22. Implementation • You can use LCMPT right now! • At this time, continue to use LCSH music terms in 650s. • Consider adding LCMPT terms in 382s in addition to LCSH: • 382 01 $a mixed chorus $a continuo $2 lcmpt • AND • 650 #0 $a Masses $v Scores. • 382 01 $a marimba $n 1 $a clarinet $n 1 $s 2 $2 lcmpt • AND • 650 #0 Clarinet and marimba music. • Music LCGFT terms out in the next year or so. • Look for a genre/form and medium of performance preconference at MLA 2015. • Tell your systems people!

  23. Retrospective Implementation??? • Once Music LCGFT terms are complete, catalogers may begin using genre/form and medium of performance terms in bibliographic records. • Looking into options for converting subject headings in legacy records to genre/form and medium of performance terms. • New task force?
