Welcome…Agenda • Class expectations for a safe, successful year. • Assignment expectations • Extra help!
Safety is key • Lab environment expectations • No food in classroom • Students need to listen to and follow safety instructions prior to and during each lab! • Student expectations • Maintain a set of class notes and lab notebook. • Practice problems during time in class in order to get feedback from teacher and peers. • Respect the differences in learning styles and pace of classmates…if you are ahead, consider helping out another student by explaining so that your learning is long-lasting!
Assignment Expectations • Use rubrics to guide assignments. Same lab rubric all year! • Complete assignments on time: • HW is given multiple nights to complete; but quizzed in class on the day it is due. • Lab Notebooks are due on the day of each test. • Formal Lab reports are given a 1 week period to work on and credit loss is -10% one day late; -25% for up to one week late.
Long Range • Standardized honors chem midterm and final exam. • End of the year lab portfolio
Extra Help! • Schedule after school help or come to scheduled study sessions before tests. • (Tuesday –Friday) • Work with peers…but make sure work is done with academic integrity. • Sometimes it takes seeing things more than one time in chemistry before they click! • Textbook • Many free online tutorials • Khan academy
