WinZip Lingo • WinZip - a common software program used to zip (compress) or unzip (decompress) computer files.
WinZip Lingo • Compression - (also known as zipping) - storing data in a format that requires less space than usual.
WinZip Lingo • Archive - a collection of computer files that have been packaged together for backup, to transport to some other location, or for saving away from the computer so that more hard disk storage can be made available. Contains files that have been compressed to their smallest size.
WinZip Lingo • Decompression - restoring a compressed (zipped) file to its original format. • Extract - to extract a file from an archive is the same as decompressing it. When this is done, the file is copied to your hard drive, yet it will remain intact in the archive.
WinZip Lingo • FTP - File Transfer Protocol - protocol used to copy files between computers: usually a client/computer and an archive/website. • Self-Extracting Archive - an archive with the .exe extension, which will automatically extract everything from the archive to the hard drive.
WinZip Can Be Used to… • Unzip files that someone sent you • Zip files to send in an email so they don’t take as long to transmit • Zip your files on your hard drive so they don’t take up as much room • Zip and password protect files that you don’t want others to see
Use WinZip… • When a file is too big to save on your floppy drive, you may be able to zip it so it will fit. • To protect files from corruption or loss of data during transmission over the Internet.
Why WinZip? • The optional wizard interface makes zipping and unzipping easier than ever • WinZip interfaces to most virus scanners • WinZip makes it easy for Windows users to work with archives through an intuitive point-and-click, drag-and-drop interface
