The Erasmus Without Paper Project Third Annual Groningen Declaration Network Meeting 7-9 April 2014 Washington DC
Erasmus without paper Context and problem area • More and more HEI students in Europe now do part of their studies abroad as exchange students (study periods and placements) • Erasmus+ is Europe’s new mobility programme 2014-2021, and is now going global • Large amounts of student data need to be exchanged in the process • Even though most of it is stored electronically, the exchange of data is still largely paper-based
Erasmus without paper Documents to be stamped and signed • Bilateral agreement • Application form • Nominations • Learning agreement and change form(s!) including student data and course catalogue data • Transcript of Records • Diploma supplements • Arrival/Departure certificates • Institutional key data
Erasmus without paper Student data repositories • Student Information Systems (SIS) • International (Exchange) Student Information Systems (ISIS) (sometimes still Excel files!) • National student databases
Erasmus without paper The solution? • Creating a network that will enable all the data repositories to communicate with each other • Exchange data, not documents (e.g. scans) • Low cost, simple, reliable, secure; tamper-proof • In line with the Groningen declaration
Erasmus without paper Types of partners to be involved in the project • Higher Education Institutes (HEI) • (Semi-)public (I)SIS consortia • Commercial (I)SIS vendors • European Higher Education Networks • Student Organisations • Groningen Declaration affiliated organisations
Erasmus without paper Main aims • mobility scenarios • transport protocols • identity management (authentication and authorization methods) • security issues • data models (with defined semantics), document formats • mobility connectors • dissemination and exploitation
Erasmus without paper Timing • First meeting: december 2012 • 3 follow-up consortium meetings • Project proposal to be submitted on 30 April 2014 (KA2 – Strategic Partnerships - 2 years as of 1 September 2014) • Follow-up project under KA3 Policy actions (preliminary call autumn 2014)
