Description of diphthongs • There are eight diphthongs in English. Diphthongs are sounds which consist of a movement of glide from one to another.Perhaps the most important thing to remember about all the diphthongs is that the first part is much longer and stronger than the second part.
Diphthongs /IE, eE, JE/ / eI, aI, RI/ /EJ, aJ / Diphthongs can be divided into two groups: one group (IE, eE, JE) are called centring diphthongs, and the other group (eI, aI, RI , EJ, aJ )are called closing diphthongs.
Practice the following sounds and words: • /aI/ 从嘴大到嘴小。 • pine,mine, ripe,fight. • my eyes/ why sigh/ high time/ by and by/wind up • /eI/:may day/pay day/make way/ came again /take away/a great change/a railway station
/CI/ • soy sauce/The boy destroyed the toy. / He avoided making the choice /they were annoyed by the nose of the buoys. • /JE/ • A sure cure/ a pure jewel/ fewer and fewer/ poor but pure/furious and curious • They toured the moor in February.
/aJ/ town, out, shroud, crown, growl. /EJ/:soul, moan, ice cream cone, woe (悲伤). 句子:oh , don’t go home alone./ Little strokes fell great oaks(滴水穿石). As you sow you shall mow(种瓜得瓜,种豆得豆). A rolling stone gathers no moss(滚石不生苔). Riddles: What can you catch but not throw? (A cold) What has holes but holds water? (A sponge)
