EPR is based on • Ethnomusicology • Field & lab- work • The field of Computer Aided Research.
Furthermore, ERP is based on • Modern Greek studies • Sociology • Social Anthropology • Fine Arts
Part Α : Data collection -Field recordings: • Observation • Participation • Recordings • Documentation & other information.
Part B’: Lab analysis. • Classification - archiving of the collected data • Tapes -to- note ( poetic texts & conversations) • Transcriptions (scores) • Testingand analysis
Research tests the following hypotheses: • The continuation of the culture on the island. • the uniformο of the cultural area that Cyprus geographically covers
Main objectives: • Systematic study of music tradition-including documentation. • Organization of the • (a)Ethnomusicology Archives, and • (b)Musicological Research Centre • Two volumes with music and poetry
Main objectives: • On-line cources. • On-line Music Archive. • Compact discs (CD - audio). • CD-ROM, using multimedia and audio-video.
ERP also aims to specify and study: • The structure of the songs. • Their functions and uses to the performers & audience. • Their significance and role in the society.
The Method of Ethnomusicology • The natural behaviour of performers and audience • Study of structure and function • The social behaviour that surrounds musical performing
The structural study. Analysis of: • Musical form & rhythm • Scales & modes • Melody & ornaments • Poetic text • Other structural elements
Music is faced as a form that.... • is being modified & trancripted in variations, • is seen in a live social system, • covers a broad spectrum of musical structure.
Data collection procedure • Choose the communities. • Access. • Setting the team up. • Relations with informants. • Recordings audio, video. • Departure.
Field work. Advantages we counted • The amount of data collected • The understanding of the community(emic, etic). • Unknown traditions. • Each field of work was unique • The live perfomances
Problems we faced during field-work • Small groups. • Unwilliness of the people. • Age and physical situation. • The quality of performances due to performers’ skills, and phycological reasons.
Problems we faced during fied-work • The equipment. • The whather and minor natural disasters (Pahpos erthq.) • Getting permission to use recording equipment. • Financial problems
Ethical and legal cosiderations • We represented ourselves honestly. • Clear presentation of our reasons for being present in a community. • We were responsible for our conduct in the field.
Ethical and legal cosiderations • Confidentiality was basic to all of us involving human beings. • We did respect our informants’ beliefs and traditions. • We prepered ourselves to be aware of proprietary concerns. (Economic concerns included) • The research team cultivates honest relationships.
Recording clearence • Archive to deposit the collection. • Determination of the probable uses of the data (Accessibility). • Checked the recording agreements (written or verbal). • Trying to fulfill all abligations made to our informants.
Other sources • Books and magazines from the community. • University projects. • Written info, photos, films, etc. • Recordings and home videos. • Official documents. • Other non-music Archives.
Choosing the equipment. We considered: • The nature of our reseasrh. • The field and Lab conditions. • To have them well-maintained. • Training for learning to operate them. • Dress rehearsals to make sure all equipment works.
Kept ourselves up with the equipment market • Reel-to-reel (analog). • Audiocassette (analog) • DAT (Digital technology) • Computers, Software & Hardware. • Other accessories.
