  3. 1945 - Auschwitz is evacuated on 18 January • Of the 3,000 children involved in Mengele's experiments at Auschwitz only about 200remain • Mengele escaped to Argentina and remained in hiding for several more decades. • In 1992, DNA from a skeleton found in South America was matched to DNA from Mengele’s son, and the Mengele’s disappearing act was solved.
