POINTER A graphical extension of your hand used to manipulate the items on your desktop. Usually seen as an arrow
Start Button Located in the bottom left corner of the desktop. Words and icons in it are headings for starting applications software.
MENUS Programs: contains all the software applications. Search: used to find files on your computer or floppy disk. Help & Support: contains information on specific topics
My Computer A folder that contains shortcuts to the hard drive, floppy drive, CD Rom, USB drive, and printers.
Recycle Bin Used to get rid of unwanted files. Files can be recovered until they are removed from here.
Network Neighborhood Shows all of the computers and printers connected to your computer. This is where you go to get to a network folder.
KEYBOARD Primary input device
MAIN KEYBOARD Looks like a typewriter; contains letters, numbers, and symbols (characters)
MODIFER KEYS Shift, Control, Alt Modify or change the meaning of other keys. To use: hold one down and press a character key.
More Keys End Key moves the cursor to the end of a line. Page Up & Page Down move the contents of a window up or down. Ins toggles “overwrite” so that text is not inserted, but written on top of what exists. Home Key moves the cursor to the beginning of a line.
FUNCTION KEYS F1 through F12 Provided an easy way to enter commands. Now we use a mouse or modifier keys.
CURSOR MOVEMENT KEYS Cursor: point on the screen where characters are being entered Movement Keys (arrow keys): let you move the cursor around the screen
INDICATOR LIGHTS Give information about the keyboard’s current settings (Num Lock, Caps Lock, Scroll Lock)
NUMERIC KEYPAD Designed like a calculator to make entering numbers easier
