For the gate is small and the way is narrow that leads to life, and there are few who find it.”
REASONS FOR REFINING • Definition: refining is the process of removing impurities and separating parts so that desired results are achieved • Reason refining is needed: useless or inefficient in its current form for intended purpose • God uses trials as refining opportunities 1. trials that are consequences of living in a fallen world 2. trials that come as a result of our disobedience to God (God caused or God allowed??) • Disappointments, rebukes, tragedies, minor irritations • Successes, acquisition of stuff, social standing • 1 Corinthians 9:26-27 Therefore I run in such a way, as not without aim; I box in such a way, as not beating the air; but I discipline my body and make it my slave, so that, after I have preached to others, I myself will not be disqualified.
REFINING • Disqualified: adokimos • Tested, proven: dokimos or dokimazo root • James 1:2-4 Consider it all joy, my brethren, when you encounter various trials, knowing that the testing of your faith produces endurance. And let endurance have its perfect result, so that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing. • Endurance: hupomone: abiding under LEARNING TO RESPOND APPROPRIATELY • 1 Corinthians 9:24-26 Do you not know that those who run in a race all run, but only one receives the prize? Run in such a way that you may win. Everyone who competes in the games exercises self-control in all things. They then do it to receive a perishable wreath, but we an imperishable.
OUR CHOICE • Jeremiah 6:29-30 The bellows blow fiercely, The lead is consumed by the fire; In vain the refining goes on, but the wicked are not separated. They call them rejected silver, because the LORD has rejected them. • Rejected: maas: reprobate; wasted; cast away • Proverbs 17:3 The refining pot is for silver and the furnace for gold, but the LORD tests hearts. • Zechariah 13:9 "And I will bring the third part through the fire, Refine them as silver is refined, And test them as gold is tested. They will call on My name, And I will answer them; I will say, 'They are My people,' And they will say, 'The LORD is my God.'" • Psalm 66:10 For You have tried us, O God; You have refined us as silver is refined.
OUR PART; GOD’S PART • Psalm 50:15 Call upon Me in the day of trouble; I shall rescue you, and you will honor Me." • CALL: qara: to call, cry out, proclaim, read; invite intervention • RESCUE: chalats: to deliver; to equip for fight • HONOR: kabad: to be heavy or weighty in the sense of awe; to strengthen respect • GOD’S PART: HE IS SOVEREIGN; can you trust His sovereignty; Is God Trustworthy? • OUR PART: Can you trust His sovereignty; are you able to believe God’s promises even in difficult times?
IF IT’S DISCIPLINE… • Hebrews 12:7-11 It is for discipline that you endure; God deals with you as with sons; for what son is there whom his father does not discipline? But if you are without discipline, of which all have become partakers, then you are illegitimate children and not sons. Furthermore, we had earthly fathers to discipline us, and we respected them; shall we not much rather be subject to the Father of spirits, and live? For they disciplined us for a short time as seemed best to them, but He disciplines us for our good, so that we may share His holiness. All discipline for the moment seems not to be joyful, but sorrowful; yet to those who have been trained by it, afterwards it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness.
IF IT’S THE WORLD…. • Romans 8:26-28 In the same way the Spirit also helps our weakness; for we do not know how to pray as we should, but the Spirit Himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words; and He who searches the hearts knows what the mind of the Spirit is, because He intercedes for the saints according to the will of God. And we know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose. • OUR PART: love God (agapao) calling: (kletos) purpose: (prothesis:showbread)
Matthew 7:13-14 "Enter through the narrow gate; for the gate is wide and the way is broad that leads to destruction, and there are many who enter through it. For the gate is small and the way is narrow that leads to life, and there are few who find it. THE TABERNACLE VEIL OF LIFE DOOR OF TRUTH THE WAY OR NARROW GATE John 14:6 Jesus said to him, "I am the way, and the truth, the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me.
TRUTHS ABOUT GOD • GOD IS SOVEREIGN: dunastes: the one with all power and authority; the ultimate ruletr • Lamentations 3:37-38 Who is there who speaks and it comes to pass, unless the Lord has commanded it?Is it not from the mouth of the Most High that both good and ill go forth? • John 19:10-11 So Pilate said to Him, "You do not speak to me? Do You not know that I have authority to release You, and I have authority to crucify You?” Jesus answered, "You would have no authority over Me, unless it had been given you from above; for this reason he who delivered Me to you has the greater sin."
TRUTHS ABOUT GOD • GOD IS INFINITELY WISE:sophos: able to use what is known in practical skills; extraordinary acumen in application • Romans 16:27 …. to the only wise God, through Jesus Christ, be the glory forever. Amen. • Romans 11:33-36 Oh, the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are His judgments and unfathomable His ways! For WHO HAS KNOWN THE MIND OF THELORD, ORWHO BECAME HIS COUNSELOR? Or WHO HAS FIRST GIVEN TO HIMTHAT ITMIGHT BE PAID BACK TO HIM AGAIN? For from Him and through Him and to Him are all things. To Him be the glory forever. Amen.
TRUTHS ABOUT GOD • GOD IS PERFECTLY LOVING: agapao: the sort of love that is an action that puts another person’s best interest first • 1 John 4:16-19 We have come to know and have believed the love which God has for us. God is love, and the one who abides in love abides in God, and God abides in him. By this, love is perfected with us, so that we may have confidence in the day of judgment; because as He is, so also are we in this world. There is no fear in love; but perfect love casts out fear, because fear involves punishment, and the one who fears is not perfected in love. We love, because He first loved us.
