Nativism is the belief that people born in the U.S. are better than immigrants

Nativists wanted to get rid of the immigrants or limit the number of “new” immigrants coming into America.
The immigrants were: *taking jobs *working for less pay *religious and cultural differences *increasing crime *too many immigrants
Chinese Exclusion Act-no Chinese immigrants could enter the U.S. for 10 years and if they left they could not come back.
The “Gentlemen’s Agreement”-a agreement with Japan that said that Japan would limit the number of immigrants coming to America if America would treat the one’s already here fairly.
Immigration Act of 1917-excluded immigrants if they could not read or write in a language or if they had a criminal record.
