Why are we building a Bus Rapid Transit Network? • The West of England is prosperous • High car dependency • Significant progress over the last ten years, but… • Reputation for congestion • Ambitious growth forecasts • Need to encourage shift to more sustainable modes • Need to improve access to job opportunities
Why are we building a Bus Rapid Transit Network? • Tackle traffic congestion • Support economic growth • Reduce emissions • Bus-based vehicle, but not just `a nice bus’
Key MetroBus Principles • Quick, frequent, reliable • Segregated routes - `think tram, do bus’ • Connected to key destinations • Smart and integrated ticketing • Distinctive, high quality vehicles • High quality interchange facilities e.g. bus stops, footpath links, cycle storage etc. • Opportunity for feeder (`complementary’) bus services to also benefit from core routes. • Where possible, good parallel walking and cycling facilities.

In Partnership • Commercial provision of MetroBus services • An agreement has been developed with operators to achieve a high quality and sustainable network • Proposals received from 2 operators covering the majority of the network • Discussion ongoing to determine the details of each operation • Operators to be announced after General Election
