Synthesis Decomposition Oxidation Precipitation CHEMICAL REACTIONS
Chemical Reactions • During a chemical reaction, 1 or more substances react (reagents) and change to form a new product or products • There are 4 types of chemical changes: • Synthesis • Decomposition • Oxidation • Precipitation
Synthesis Video • Atoms form chemical bonds to make a new molecule • x + y xy reagents(R) product(P) • Na + ClNaCl • Li + F LiF Example: photosynthesis
Decomposition • Breaking a molecule bond to form 2 or more atoms • Examples: respiration, digestion • xy (R) x + y (P) • 2 H₂O 2 H₂ + O₂ • 2 CuO 2 Cu + O₂ • Video
Oxidation • Synthesis reaction where O₂ bonds with another atom to form a molecule • Examples: combustion, corrosion • 4 Fe + 3 O₂ 2 Fe₂O₃
Precipitation • 2 solutions mix and react to form a new substance • Usually a liquid with a solid settling at the bottom, this is called the precipitate • The solid form is less or not soluble • Example: milk and vinegar • Video
