What is a Lewis Diagram? • Simplified Bohr diagrams which only consider electrons in outer energy levels are called Lewis Diagram. • A Lewis Diagram consists of the element symbol surrounded by "dots" to represent the number of electrons in the outer energy level as represented by a Bohr Diagram. • The number of electrons in the outer energy level is correlated by simply reading the Group number.
Example 1: • Your element is Magnesium • Draw the Bohr Model for it: • Notice you have 2 valence electrons (in orange). These are used to draw the Lewis Diagram 12 p+ 12 no
Lewis Diagram for Magnesium • You learned that Magnesium has 2 valence electrons, so now you can draw the Lewis Diagram • 1ststep: write the symbol Mg • 2nd step: place the dots representing the valence electrons, around the symbol. There should be one electron on every side of the symbol, before you start pairing the electrons. Mg
Your turn • Draw the Lewis Diagram for Neon
