  2. Precious Gems • Precious= valuable, highly esteemed, cherished • Rare: most are found in Mogok, Sri Lanka, a small island in Southeast Asia. Ruby mines cover about 400 square miles, but only about 70 actually bear gems. • Even in the ruby capital of the world rubies are extremely rare.

  3. Corundum • Rubies are made from a mineral called corundum—so are sapphires. Sapphires are also precious gems, but are blue. • Slightly different amounts of corundum determine whether the stone will be red or blue. • “A ruby is not a ruby by chance, but destined to become one.”

  4. Chromium • Chromium: the element from which a ruby attains its deep red color • Also called Pigeon’s Blood • More chromium=more/deeper red=more valuable • Chromium causes cracks/fissures to form inside the stone, which breaks and devalues the ruby • Delicate balance between having just the right amount of chromium to create the best color and having too much; causing breaks and cracks.
