Corundum • Rubies are made from a mineral called corundum—so are sapphires. Sapphires are also precious gems, but are blue. • Slightly different amounts of corundum determine whether the stone will be red or blue. • “A ruby is not a ruby by chance, but destined to become one.”
Chromium • Chromium: the element from which a ruby attains its deep red color • Also called Pigeon’s Blood • More chromium=more/deeper red=more valuable • Chromium causes cracks/fissures to form inside the stone, which breaks and devalues the ruby • Delicate balance between having just the right amount of chromium to create the best color and having too much; causing breaks and cracks.
