  1. Sulfonamides:- • Oral absorbable – Short, intermediate, long • Oral non – absorbable • Topical • Short: Sulfacytine, Sulfisoxazole, Sulfamethizole • Intermediate:Sulfadiazine, sulfamethoxazole, sulfapyridine • Long: Sulfadoxine • Pyrimidines:Trimethoprim - intermediate

  2. Uses: • Oral absorbable: UTI eg. Sulfisoxazole 1gm qid, sulfadiazine + pyrimethamine – acute toxoplasmosis (1gm qid) + 75mg. The 25mg od. • Folinic acid • - Sulfadoxine + pyrimethamine – malaria • Oral non-absorbable: Sulfasalazine, - ulcerative colitis, enteritis, inflammatory bowel disease • Topical:sodium sulfacetamide – bacterial conjunctivitis, trachoma

  3. Mafenide : ADR: hypersensitivity urinary tract hematopoietic TMP – SMXSequential blockade

  4. Why TMP is combined with SMX? Sequential blockade. PK: 1 (80 mg) : 5 (400 mg) Plasma concentration: 1: 20. Perfect synergism
