The Glorious Mysteries What are the Glorious Mysteries? (list and describe) • The Resurrection (Luke 24) – Jesus rises from the dead • The Ascension (Luke 24; Acts 1) – Jesus ascends to the Father • The Pentecost (Acts 2) – the spirit descends on the disciples • The Assumption of Mary (scripture’s silence on this: Mary taken up into heaven) • The Coronation of Mary (Revelation 12?; Mary’s blessings fulfilled as Queen of creation)
The Pentecost: Acts 2: 1-12 What was the Pentecost originally? • A Jewish religious holiday • 50 days from Passover feast • Celebrates giving of law to Moses
(Acts 2:1-12) Manifestations of the Holy Spirit In what forms did the Holy Spirit become manifest on the Pentecost? • Gust of wind • “Tongues of fire” (on) each disciple • Empowerment: speaking in other tongues – ability to communicate • (Note: the disciples speak only to Jews here, not yet to “the nations”)
(Acts 2:1-12) To whom are the disciples speaking in the story? In what city are they all gathered? • They are speaking to Jews only (not Gentiles) • The Jews have gathered for the feast of the Pentecost (50 days after Passover); • The feast drew people from all over to Jerusalem, where the temple was
(Acts 2:1-12) What is the truth and the irony in the phrase, “They have had too much new wine”? • The listeners first think they are drunk and “babbling”; • Some then realize that various people can understand and that they are addressing them in their own native tongues • There is indeed “new wine”: the renewed outpouring of the Holy Spirit which radically transforms them and empowers them.
(Acts 2:1-12/Gen11:1-9) Pentecost vs. Babel How is the Pentecost a “reverse”of tower of Babel (Genesis 11:1-9)? • In the story of Babel: • They are self-empowered in speaking in one language • Humans desire to make themselves God (pride) • God descends to humble them, and they cannot understand each other • At the Pentecost: • They are God-empowered in speaking in many languages. • God makes Himself present to humans(grace) • God descends to empower them, and they can understand each other.
