  4. Differences Desktop publishing packages were originally designed for professional use in publishing. DTP programs allow you to position images and text more accurately. They give greater control over spacing and the transparency of text and images, but can be more complicated to use. Word processors will usually focus more on text than images. They are normally simpler to use and have features like Mail Merge, which some DTP programs do not.

  6. Why do DTP programs work like this? Basic DTP techniques When you use DTP packages you do not type straight onto the page. Instead you need to create text boxes and then type in your text. Likewise, images are inserted into image boxes first andthen moved around. One of the main reasons is so that text boxes and image boxes can be overlaid. Having text boxes also allows you tobe much more precise with the positioning of your text.
