  2. EVACUATION/ SHELTER IN PLACE

  3. Evacuation Consult “Fire Evacuation and Severe Weather Sheltering Procedures” for your building

  4. Tornado Safe Areas First floors of buildings, interior rooms, away from windows Designated by signs:

  5. Conditions Requiring Shelter in Place Release of contaminants into the environment (accidentally or intentionally) • Chemical • Biological • Radiological

How to Shelter-in-Place • Stop classes or work, or close business operations. • Provide for safety of all in building by asking them to stay—NOT LEAVE! • Contact families to let them know of the situation within 30 minutes of emergency campus notification. • Close and lock all windows, exterior doors, and other openings. Shut down fans and ventilation.

  7. Shelter in Place (Cont.) • If explosion danger—close window shades, blinds, or curtains. • Select interior room above ground floor, with fewest windows or vents. Make sure there is enough room for everyone to sit, or select more rooms. • Shut and lock the door. • Listen to radio, television, or check NCSU homepage for further instructions (“all clear” or “evacuate”).

  10. DO NOT WORK ALONE! At least one other authorized person must be present in the general work area. Friends, wives, children or other unauthorized students must not be in the laboratory.

  12. Protect yourself! Know what hazards are present in your work area and how to safeguard against them.

  13. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) Select and wear the proper personal protectiveequipment to protect against the hazards found in the safety plan and the MSDS.
