  1. Management Science & Engineering Peter Glynn, Chair Yinyu Ye, Affiliates Program Director Stanford University

  2. Mission Statement To provide education and research opportunities associated with the development of knowledge, tools, and methods required to make decisions and to shape policies, to configure organizational structures, to design engineering systems, and to solve problems associated with the information-intensive technology based economy.

  3. Recognition Our department was ranked the number 1 program last year by the National Research Council in our academic discipline of industrial engineering, systems engineering, and operations research departments. (This ranking is carefully put together by academics, and is the ranking taken most seriously by the university leadership.) We are a key part of a School of Engineering that is effectively tied with MIT for the top such ranking among US universities, and contains five individually top-ranked departments.

  4. Objectives • Attract the best students, give them an excellent education, and help them find jobs in top companies • Attract the best faculty and give them incentives and means to teach and conduct research at the highest level • Partner with industry to assist organizations in meeting their challenges while expanding educational and employment opportunities for our students

  5. Key Differences from Business Schools We are grounded in engineering (as reflected in our mission) • We develop and use the tools of engineering analysis (e.g., systems analysis) • We focus on technology (e.g, Work, Technology and Organization) Compared to the Stanford GSB: • We have an undergraduate program • Our 1-year MS program is more technical • We have a larger Ph.D. program

  6. MS&E created from the departments of • Engineering-Economic Systems and Operations Research (itself the result of a merger of EES and OR) • Industrial Engineering and Engineering Management Merger Date: Jan. 1, 2000

  7. Department AreasWe are an interdisciplinary department with 8 areas: • Organizations, Technology & Entrepreneurship • Systems Modeling and Optimization • Economics and Finance • Decision Analysis and Risk Analysis • Production and Operations Management • Probability and Stochastic Systems • Strategy and Policy • Information Science and Technology

  8. Research • Focuses on understanding the problems involved in the engineering aspects of managing systems and technologies, creating appropriate problem formulations and solutions, and providing relevant decision support. • We have vigorous interaction with other Stanford departments, Silicon Valley, State and Federal governments and various global organizations and corporations.

  9. Student EnrollmentOne of the largest student populations in the SOE • Enrolled in MS&E in 2013-14 • BS 147 • MS 277 • Ph.D. 106 • Demographics • All Students • female 28% ; international 42%

  10. Student Placement • MS&E graduates have pursued a broad range of careers: consulting, financial analysis, investment banking, enterprise management, government policy analysis, industrial research, high tech, entrepreneurship, line management, product development, project management, strategic planning, technology & media, internet services, biotechnology and university teaching and research.

  11. MS&E Industry Affiliates Program Program Objectives The program is designed to assist organizations in meeting today’s challenges while simultaneously expanding the educational and employment opportunities for our students.

  12. Industry Affiliates Program • Directly connects corporations with our department’s vast resources: renowned faculty, cutting-edge research centers and a thriving student community. • Close associations with industry enrich the programs by providing opportunities to apply MS&E methods to important real world problems and by motivating new theoretical developments from practical experience.

  13. Member Fees • Size of FirmAnnual Fee • ≥ 500 employees $25,000 • ≤ 500 Employees $15,000

  14. Recruiting Member Option Recruiting Fee /per Quarter $7,500 Allows companies to get acquainted with MS&E for one quarter only. Eligible for student recruiting benefits only.

  15. Research Sponsorship Option The fee for corporate sponsorship is negotiated according to the nature of the involvement the sponsor desires.

  16. Research Sponsor Option In addition to receiving the benefits of affiliate membership, Sponsors work closely with MS&E faculty to design and execute programs of applied research. Although sponsoring firms clearly benefit from a close relationship with MS&E, prospective sponsors should not construe sponsorship as synonym for a consulting relationship.

  17. Strategic Benefits of Industry Affiliates ProgramWin-Win for Department, Faculty, Students, Company Department Benefits: Affiliation with prestigious companies Links to real life problems Income supports MS&E academic programs Faculty Benefits: Research opportunities Contact with leaders in corporate environment Company Benefits: Research Projects Direct contact with students Cheaper than headhunter Direct contact with faculty Faculty recommendations for student hires Student Benefits: Real Life Projects Experience Internships Jobs

  18. Itemized Benefits Faculty Liaison • One trip per year by the faculty liaison to company site, if requested. Research Projects • Student projects where problems are worked on by teams of students supervised by faculty. • Attend departmental events, workshops/ seminars at Stanford University, creating the opportunity to meet with faculty and students on the latest field research and engage in an informal exchange of ideas among industry representatives and Stanford University researchers. • Give presentations of interest to faculty and students, thereby keeping academia aware of industry developments.

  19. Student Recruiting • Room space for information sessions and interviews, with active promotion of company recruiting events. Recommendations to company may be provided about students qualifications in order to facilitate good matches. • Access to both MS&E Department & Career Center’s web based Job boards including student resumes and job postings. • Registration to a Stanford Job Fair.

  20. Industrial Visitor Opportunity • Invitation to send an industrial visitor to campus with visitor privileges. Additional fees applicable. Facilities/Miscellaneous • A directory of current faculty and student research in the Department. • Use of the Stanford Engineering library. • Referral Service to department people and resources.

  21. Our Main Assets • Intellectual breadth • New synergies emerge • Reputation of our faculty • Outstanding students • And our people
