3.1 Transforming Equations:Addition and Subtraction • Objective: To solve equations using addition and subtraction. • Warm – up: Simplify:1) x + 6 – 6 2) t – 18 + 183) 2 + x – 2 4) -4 + r + 45) 13 – m – 13
3.1 Transforming Equations:Addition and Subtraction Properties of Equality Simplify vs.. Solve When you simplify, you want to follow PEMDAS, more specifically, MD (in any order left to right) AS (in any order left to right) When you solve, you want to reverse the order of operations and follow: AS MD • Two soccer teams are tied at half time: 2 – 2. If each team scored three goals in the next half, then what is the new score? • This shows the Addition Property of Equality. If the same number is added to equal numbers, the sums are equal. • Two sporting goods stores charge $36 for a soccer ball. If, during a sale, each store reduces the price by $5, will each store be charging the same price? • This shows the Subtraction Property of Equality. If the same number is subtracted to equal numbers, the differences are equal.
3.1 Transforming Equations:Addition and Subtraction Solve. Show all your steps! 9 + r = -3 d + 26 = -15 y – 4.7 = -6.0 3.8 = y + 1.2 • x – 6 = 12 • y + 7 = -9 • 2 = 5 + x • t – 4 = 22
3.1 Transforming Equations:Addition and Subtraction Solve. Show all your steps! Homework: Pg. 97 Written Exercises #1 – 33 odd • -y + 5 = 17 • 9 – x = 16 • 11 = 32 – y • -3 – x = 6
