  1. Cool - Accompaniment

  2. Time of Day/Geographic Context • The music used in Cool is very similar to swing Jazz which was popular to be played in clubs or bars in the evening in America. This reminds the audience that it is night time as well as the fact they are in America

  3. Mood • The mood of the accompaniment reflects the lyrics of the song – cool. • As it is swing/Jazz style music that was usually associated with cool/fashionable jazz bands of that era. • As it is also smooth flowing in the beginning it feels very relaxed until each gang member has dance out their frustration in a solo and the whole group dances together to the melody using the full orchestration.

  4. Aids Narrative by Giving a Big Build Up • The number cool sets the story up as the characters are trying to contain their energy • It builds up excitement for the audience as they don’t want the gangs to get into trouble with the cops so they hope they can ‘keep cool’

  5. Volume Change • During this scene the accompaniment begins quiet and contained which then builds up to a climax of full orchestral music as the gang dances and let off steam • The music fades out whilst the gang repeat the verse of the song. The full orchestration then kicks in before fading out slowly whilst the gang click their fingers
