Themes • His works insist that we live in a universe of vast and indifferent natural forces, not in a world of divine providence or a certain moral order. • "You can't do it by rule any more than you can learn to dance by rule. You have to have the itch of the thing in your fingers, and if you haven't--well, you're d@!#ed lucky, and you'll live long and prosper, that's all.” • Stephen Crane's The Red Badge of Courage explores the effect of an extreme environment on a fairly typical individual. The Youth's indoctrination into the glories of warfare gets him to the battle, but what keeps him there is something much less based in ideas.

  6. Relevance to the Modern World Stephen Crane’s ideas are still relevant to today’s world through money, greed, and the corruption of the world that we people live in. We believe this is seen mainly in the world of politics, which really contains all three and is a good example of greed, money, and corruption. Stephen Crane’s view was that you live, do what you can do in life, and then die.
