Importance of confidence developed at school for participation in adult learning “I used to think that I wouldn’t wanna speak in certain circles ‘cos I was inferior, I suppose em… I didn’t think that anyone would want to listen to anything I had to say. And I think I did carry around the fact that I’d gone to this really dreadful school […] I know now when I look back that that wasn’t the truth, but at the time I did feel as though, ‘I won’t be able to do it’ and em, you know, ‘I’ll look sort of stupid in front of all these people’” Louise 2004
