Aim & Purpose The aim of this unit is to develop a learners under -standing and knowledge of the roles, responsibilities, skills and techniques of a sports coach and how to apply them whilst coaching and/or leading sports sessions. Learning Outcomes: Know the roles, responsibilities and skills of sports coaches Know the techniques used by coaches to improve the performance of athletes Be able to plan a sports coaching session Be able to deliver and review a sports coaching session.

Objectives • How you are going to achieve your aim. • In order to achieve your aims, you will need to have objectives. These should be clearly written on your session plan and should express how you will meet them. • Introduction to desired outcome, demonstrate and develop the required technique
Targets • Targets are athlete focused • Set to address strengths & areas for development/improvement. • A session plan should focus on particular performers and set realistic targets • S.M.A.R.T or S.M.A.R.T.E.R
SMART Goals • S - SPECIFIC- precise & detailed • M - MEASURABLE– what by when • A - ACHIEVABLE–period of time & relevant • R - REALISTIC– appropriate for the athlete • T - TIME-BOUND– Ensure you agree a timescale, even if it includes mini-targets for athlete development (short-term / long-term)
SMARTER Goals • E - EXCITING - Must be stimulating for the athlete • R - RECORDED - So progress can be monitored – observation analysis

Resources • Session planning – What resources are required in each component of the session and how they will be used. • 3 different types of resources used in a coaching session • Human • Physical • Fiscal
Health & Safety • Risk Assessments • Sports coaches must exercise their duty of care at all times to provide a safe environment for the athletes who participate • Must comply with all relevant health & safety legislation • E.G. – Health & Safety at work Act (1974)
Risk Assessment • LOW – No or minimal risk of injury • MEDIUM – Some risk of injury • HIGH – High risk of injury • If the risk is higher than LOW, the coach must take action and eliminate the hazard, where possible, or reduce it to an acceptable level by reviewing and adding precautions • Consult senior coaches to discuss whether the session should proceed
Emergency Procedures • Coach needs to be aware of all emergency procedures for the facility • Coach should share their knowledge of emergency procedures with the athlete at the start of every session • Therefore the coach needs to familiarise themselves with...............

Contingency Planning • A good coach should be prepared • Contingency planning is being Prepared! • What could go wrong? • Do everything you can • Check all equipment, Facilities, Participants • Have an CONTINGENCY plan and be prepared in case something does go wrong
