  2. Through the poem the Persona shows his desire for Porphyria’s affection • The persona has a very twisted way of looking at things. • He’s Jealous of Porphyria • “That moment she was mine, mine fair, perfectly pure and good: I found a thing to do.”

  3. Tone • Robert Browning uses dramatic monologue to add a dark tone to the poem. • Persona begging’s to bring a little tension in line 15 • At this the reader focuses on what is going to happen next. • We make a shocking discovery as he kills her. • He brushes of the fact that he has just committed a murder

  4. Mood • The mood is very possessive and lustful • As you read the poem you can picture his eyes of insanity

  5. Poetic Devices Language and Punctuation • “It tore the elm tops down for spite.” • “And kneel’d and made the cheerless grate, blaze up, and the cottage warm.” • Punctuation is used for Pauses in sentences or Paragraphs. • In Porphyria’s lover this is seen strongly in the quote: • “Happy and Proud; at last I knew Porphyria worshipped me; surprise.”

  6. The next Poem I will be analysing is Daddy By Sylvia Plath. • Similarities between the two are the Male Dominance expressed in both texts, and the oppression towards the women.

  9. Tone • Adult engulfed in outrage • Fear from Childhood • Conflict expresses male authority • Examples from NAZI Germany • Horror with male domination • Relates this with concentration camps ( and Panzer Men. • May as well be a Jew • Dachau, Auschwitz, Belsen

Mood • Through the poem there is mood of anger and hopelessness • So black no sky could squeak through.” • “At twenty I tried to die” ….. “They pulled me out of the sack, and they stuck me together with glue.” • “Any more black shoe.” • “The tongue stuck on my Jaw.” “It stuck in a barbwire fence.”

  11. Language/ Poetic Devices • The Language is modern. • Poem uses several relevant poetic devices such as: • “Any more black shoe.” • “And a head in the freakish Atlantic • Where it pours bean green over blue.”

  12. Punctuation • The punctuation breaks down the poem. • Helps persona express anger and emotion.

The next Poem I will be analyzing is Fight It Away; I wrote this poem my self. • This poem contrasts with both Porphyria’s Lover and Daddy, as it doesn’t express any male dominance. • This Poem expresses humans incapability to be humble . • Human must take revenge • This poem also expresses how much easier it is if your humble, and how much better it is if you fight the irritating and hurtful deed away, without wanting to seek revenge.

  15. Fight it away “I won’t let them enter, fight them out like never before. My shield in front of my chest no pain will I feel.” I said this; true thought I. Like a mouse faced with a cat I ran; with will for revenge. My shield broken, heart bleeding. Anger took over me, Pain penetrated. Strength to fight, where have you gone? So determined at the beginning Anger has killed you.

  16. Mind a black cloud. Reason lost. Sword in my heart, present there always. Nothing can take it away, but revenge, I think. The main puzzle piece trapped, in the corner of death. My hands hold the sword Shaken I feel “Do I! Do it! Tear it out! I see those eyes, Fear fills them I feel it, its coming back I’m determined to fight it all away.

  17. Let it go it tells me. Be strong, walk away, the strength for good in me is weak. Shattered, by the will for revenge “Fight it away, Fight it away.” Words ignored, sword penetrated. Through the shield Through the flesh, I push, push The good in me says stop But the sword does not. It’s a broken shield, and another bleeding heart. A cycle of torment; fight it away, and its broken.

  18. It’s a cycle, because we hurt the person who hurt us, and then, they seek revenge • This is stated in the Poem through the quote: • “A cycle of torment; fight it away and its broken.” • To fight away means to be humble, and also to forgive.
