MLA – Integrating Quotes To Kill A Mockingbird
Short Quotes • Fewer than 4 typed lines of prose / 3 of verse (poetry) • Enclose the quotation with double quotation marks “ “ • Provide the author and specific page citation (parenthetical citation) • if poetry, provide the line number • When using 1 work (as you are in this expository essay) you only need to include the author’s name in the first citation, every other one you can simply put (page number). • Punctuation should appear AFTER the parenthetical citation if they are not part of the passage, but WITHIN the quotation if they are part of the quoted passage
Short Quote Example • Atticus believes it is important to try and see situations from the other person’s point of view, “[to] climb into his skin and walk around in it” (Lee 39). Atticus raises his kids to be honest and respectful people and wants them to know that there are two sides to every argument. • Notice that the quote is NOT free standing; it is incorporated into the sentence. Then, I have a sentence afterward explaining the point I’m trying to make by using that quote.
Long Quotes (Block Quotes) • More than 4 lines / 3 lines of verse • Place quoted passage in a free standing block of text and omit the quotation marks • Start the quote on a new line and indent 1 inch (2 tabs) from left margin • Your parenthetical citation should come AFTER the closing punctuation mark in the blocked quote
Long Quote Example • Atticus tried his best to explain to Scout the situation surrounding him and the trial: I’m simply defending a Negro – his name’s Tom Robinson. He lives in that little settlement beyond the town dump. He’s a member of Calpurnia’s church, and Cal knows his family well. She says they’re clean-living folks. Scout, you aren’t old enough to understand some things yet, but there’s been some high talk around town to the effect that I shouldn’t do much about defending this man. It’s a peculiar case … (Lee 100) The town is upset with Atticus because he is actually going to do his best to defend a black man, but he is defending Tom because he is a man with morals.
Adding/Omitting Words in Quotes • If you are adding words to a quotation that are not part of the original text, place the word(s) in [brackets] • If you are omitting words, you should show that you have deleted words by using ellipsis marks ( … ) preceded and followed by a space • You do not put the parentheses around the ellipsis
Works Cited • Goes on a new page • Basic Format: • Author’s Last name, First name. Title of novel. City of Publication: Publisher, Year of Publication. Medium of Publication. • All of this information can be found in the first few pages of the book before the text begins. • Medium of publication simply means is it a print format or web based? Example: Works Cited Henley, Patricia. The Hummingbird House. Denver: MacMurray, 1999. Print.
