  2. Free-Write Study the picture. Write a thesis statement about how you think the person in the picture is likely to feel 20 years from now about doing this act. Create a committed thesis statement and begin considering how the rest of your essay would come together based on that thesis statement.

  3. Thesis Statements • The thesis statement is a single sentence in the opening paragraph that sums up what the essay is about. Every essay should have a thesis statement that functions like a road sign, telling the reader where the essay intends to go. A thesis statement has three practical aims: • It tells in a single sentence what your essay is about • It helps you organize your essay • It reflects your understanding of the topic and your feelings about it

Writing a Thesis Statement • 2 Parts: • a topic part, which states the topic • a comment part, which makes an important point about the topic • 3 Characteristics: • It is potentially interesting to the intended audience. • It is as specific as possible. • It limits the topic enough to make it manageable. (Bedford St. Martin’s Handbook, Section 3c)

Burnham & Phelan, “Laughing All the Way to the Darwinian Bank” • In their essay, “Laughing All the Way to the Darwinian Bank,” Burnham and Phelan use informal language and anecdotal evidence to argue that humans are not born with the instinct to save money. • Interesting? • Specific? • Manageable?

  8. Group Competition • You have approximately 2 MINUTES to identify as many rhetorical choices in the Burnham & Phelan essay as you can. • The group that identifies the most rhetorical choices gets a prize!

  9. Peer Review – in Pairs • Exchange Homework • Evaluate your partner’s thesis work based on the following criteria: • Does it make an argument about rhetoric? • Is it interesting? Specific? Manageable? • Did your partner use evidence from the essay? • Make notes and revise your partner’s thesis.

Homework • RaiderWriter: • BA4 (due 10/3/14 for Section 002) • Reading 7 • Additional Assignments • Read: “Why Amazon Can’t Make a Kindle in the USA” by Steve Denning (FYW 383-387) • Using the information about Attributive Tags (FYW 134-136), put together 2 quotations that facilitate answering Question #1 in “Looking at Rhetoric” on p. 387. For each quotation, write a couple sentences that explain why you chose those quotations.
