Louisiana Purchase • In 1803 T. Jefferson purchased land from Napoleon • Doubled the size of America
Lewis and Clark Expedition • The expedition of Meriwether Lewis and William Clark (Sacajawea) westward to Pacific Ocean. • Left from St. Louis in Sept. 1803, reached CA in 1805, and back to St. Louis in 1806
War of 1812 • US declared war against Britain in 1812 (impressments) • British burned Washington, D.C • Eventually US won (Star Spangled Banner..US Nat’l Anthem)

The Monroe Doctrine • Issued by Pres. James Monroe in 1823 • Goal was to prevent any European country from colonizing lands within the Western Hemisphere • Teddy Roosevelt will use this in 1900 to justify American involvement in Latin America
