  1. Impact of NW Ordinance on new states, slavery, and education • NW Ordinance passed in 1787; divided area into smaller territories, and set guidelines for them to become states. • Slavery was illegal • Land expansion showed the need for public education

  2. Noah Webster • Compiled the first US dictionary that included words and spellings distinct to the US rather than traditional British versions. (Town vs. Towne; labor vs. labour) • Played a major role in forming a national language.

  3. Louisiana Purchase • In 1803 T. Jefferson purchased land from Napoleon • Doubled the size of America

  4. Lewis and Clark Expedition • The expedition of Meriwether Lewis and William Clark (Sacajawea) westward to Pacific Ocean. • Left from St. Louis in Sept. 1803, reached CA in 1805, and back to St. Louis in 1806

  5. War of 1812 • US declared war against Britain in 1812 (impressments) • British burned Washington, D.C • Eventually US won (Star Spangled Banner..US Nat’l Anthem)

  6. National Identity • The War of 1812 helped shape America’s sense of national identity. • Pride in your country • US made goods rather than imports • Agriculture grew

  7. New York City/ Erie Canal • Textile mills popped up all across NYC • The Eric Canal’s completion in 1825 (connected the Hudson River to Lake Erie) turned NYC into a dominant commercial shipping city.

  8. The American System • The War of 1812 showed danger of relying on imports • Henry Clay proposed the American System • North= Industry • South= Agriculture • Improve infrastructure • Protective Tariff • Second Nat’l Bank

  9. Infrastructure • Roads, railroad lines, utilities, canals, bridges, etc.

  10. The Monroe Doctrine • Issued by Pres. James Monroe in 1823 • Goal was to prevent any European country from colonizing lands within the Western Hemisphere • Teddy Roosevelt will use this in 1900 to justify American involvement in Latin America
