The newsletter started as a vehicle to interpret and facilitate a developing technology (microbial source tracking or MST) among the public, scientists, state regulatory agencies, and policy makers. MST is one of the most promising new technologies that identifies the sources of pollution in impaired waters. The constituency served by the newsletter has strongly urged the transformation of the newsletter into a professional peer-reviewed journal, The Journal of Environmental Detection or JED. Publication of JED (inaugural issue July 2007) will focus on case studies of non-point pollution detection methods for both biological and non-biological pollution sources. With the status of a scientific journal, JED plans to move into the bio- and agroterrorism arena where the concerns of all water quality stakeholders intersect. This poster summarizes the content of the first issue and relates how the journal will provide a unique interface between diverse communities with differing agendas united by a common goal—safe and clean water.
