SENSOR APPLICATION LAB Dr. Ahmadi ECE 1020 George Washington University
LAB OBJECTIVES • For students to take an active role in learning about sensors and their applications in biomedical engineering • For students to enhance their research and presentation skills
SENSORS • Sensors convert signals of one type of quantity such as hydrostatic fluid pressure into an equivalent signal of another type of quantity. • Biomedical sensors take signals representing biomedical variables and convert them into what is usually an electrical signal
CLASSIFICATION OF BIOMEDICAL SENSORS • Physical sensors • Geometric • Mechanical • Thermal • Hydraulic • Electric • Optical • Magnetic • Chemical sensors • Gas • Electrochemical • Photometric • Other physical chemical methods • Bioanalytic
LAB RESEARCH ACTIVITY • Each Group Should: • Select a Physical Sensor • Identify the INPUT signal for the sensor • Briefly describe how the sensor works • Identify the OUTPUT signal for the sensor • Identify AT LEAST ONE biomedical application for that sensor and explain how it is used
LAB PRESENTATION • Based on your research, prepare a 5-slide power point presentation that includes: • Name and Picture of Physical Sensor • Brief Schematic and Explanation of how the sensor works • Input and Output Signal of Sensor • Biomedical Application(s) of Sensor (pictures and explanation)
LAB PRESENTATION RULES AND TIPS • Groups should introduce their team members to the class before the presentation. • Each group member must contribute to the sensor research. • Each group member must have an oral part in the presentation. • Presentation should be no longer than 5 minutes.
