Western SARE Grant How do we come up with a Whitefly Data Exploration System?
Project Background • Geography: Pinal and Maricopa County • Square Mileage • % Ag Usage • 90% of population inhabits less than 10% of the land • Vast tracks of un-improved land. Riparian corridors • Climate • Arid Region, rainfall amounts • El Nino, La Nina, winter/summer rain patterns • Monsoon • Economy • %Ag to AZ GDP • Whiteflies • Background of disease information • $$$ lost due to whitefly-carried diseases • Cultivated/Un-Cultivated habitats, Summer vs Winter, etc
Project Timeline • Phase I Needs Assessment – Initial Data Collection: 0 – 9 months • Phase II Partnerships with Early Adopters: 9 – 12 months • Phase III Software Public Release 12 – 24 months • Part IV Retention and Software Modifications 12 – 36 months
Phase I – Needs Assessment • Identify User Needs • Find what growers want • Use of Discovery/Participatory Presentations • Initial Data Collection • Pre-Determined In-Field Sampling • Agricultural Areas • Uncultivated Areas • Use of Field Cameras and Digital Handhelds • Timeline: 0 – 9 months
Phase II – Partnerships with Early Adopters • Identify Key Growers from initial stakeholder meetings • Become “First Adopters” • Whitefly Traps and training is given. • Need to ensure that all participants are counting flies consistently • Sampling Techniques are documented
Phase II – Partnerships with Early Adopters: continued • Develop Beta Software • Account Creation form allows users to get personal account • Growers can submit Whitefly Trap counts online • Simple visualizations show grower’s area. • Data from Extension sampling is shown • Documentation is provided • Demonstration Meetings are Held • Register Early Adopters
Phase II – Partnerships with Early Adopters: continued • Retention Issues • Early-Adopters are continually encouraged to upload their samples • Reports are created to identify participants that are not uploading data • Reports are derived to remind extension agents of when and who needs to be encouraged. • Auto-generated reminder emails can be sent • Feedback meetings are held to identify usability issues with the website.
Phase III Software Public Release • Software Improvements: • User feedback is reviewed to improve website • Information about benefits of the project are added to the website • Improved visualizations allow user to see other base layers. • Website Animations allow users to scroll through different weeks of data collection • Hover over data points to get detailed bar-graph information • Announce public release of software • Press Releases • Recruiting Tours • Training Seminars • Develop mechanism to mass-mail whitefly traps • Pre-printed labels, etc
Phase IV – Retention and Software Modifications • Develop Strategy to retain users • Disseminate reports of cost-savings • Utilize auto-generated usage reports to identify waning users • Quarterly lunch meetings to talk about whiteflies and patterns • Develop new features • Better data-explorations tools • Allow users to vote on upcoming peak-times of whitefly infestation • Develop gadget/widget that summarizes whitefly data • Continue to modify existing site based on user feedback
