Chapter 8: Cellular Energetics Feb. 21, 2005 Holly Gasal
ATP • ATP is a universal energy currency found in all types of organisms. • Glycolysis, cellular respiration and photosynthesis are the 3 main sources of ATP.
Glycolysis • The initial step of glucose metabolism occurs in the cytosol of the cell. • Glucose is converted to pyruvate by 10 water soluble enzymes.
F1 (ATPase) portion of the complex is responsiblefor ATP production F0 portion acts as a proton channel. ATP synthesis using proton motive force
Conclusion • ATP is the universal energy of all organisms. • Glycolysis – the initial step in glucose metabolism – yields 2 ATP, 2 NADH, and 2 pyruvate molecules. • Fermentation is the further metabolism of pyruvate in the absence of oxygen. • Cellular respiration consists of the further metabolism of glucose in the presence of oxygen through the citric acid cycle. • The electron transport chain produces a proton gradient which drives the production of ATP by the F0F1complex.
