The missing emphasis University of School of Southampton Education
Vulnerability issues • historical failure to acknowledge their human status; • separate and distinct groups each defined by their most prominent ‘deficits’; • lack of voice; • the impossibility of talking to them about mental health issues; • lack of physical and purposeful activity make this group especially vulnerable to depression University of School of Southampton Education

Part 3 Beyond access University of School of Southampton Education
Seminar questions • what do people want access to? • what hinders people with learning difficulties gaining access? • and how can we make access better? University of School of Southampton Education
What is access? • the term access implies special effort to get ordinary things University of School of Southampton Education
What do people want access to? I want the bus to stop when I put my hand out… University of School of Southampton Education
Emerging themes • we have come a long way • there are still a lot of things we have not got right • communication is central • time is crucial • access requires society to believe in the capacity and capability of people with learning difficulties University of School of Southampton Education
Conclusion Access to communication needs to be re-connected with a broader access agenda. In that way, when we are discussing rights, which thankfully we do a lot in the twenty-first century, the right to access meaningful relationships through self-selected modes of communication will be prominent and an environment will be created in which Intensive Interaction can be sustained.
