Why Practice Sight Words? • The Fry Instant Word List (1980) represents 50 percent of all the words children encounter in elementary school reading. • When a child knows sight words they have a “foothold” when they begin to read books. • Reading these words should not take the place of reading real books! Please continue to read to your child every night!
What is fluent reading? As you read, remember, fluent reading is not reading as fast as you can! Fluent reading is: Fluency is the ability to read a text accurately and quickly. Fluent readers read aloud effortlessly and with expression. Their reading sounds natural, as if they are speaking. Readers who have not yet developed fluency read slowly, word by word. Their oral reading is choppy. Taken from www.Reading Rockets.org
Think about a race car! • If a race car goes too slow, it will lose the race. • If a race car goes too fast, it will crash! • But if a race car goes at a good speed, it will win the race!! You can be a reading winner!
