Stanley Kubrick • Born 26 July 1928 in New York • Died 7 March 1999 in Hertfordshire, England • Started photography at age of 13 • Worked as photographer at age of 17 • Made his first film with friend, Alexander Singer, Day of the Fight in 1951 • Directed 16 films and contributed to many more

  11. 3. Critics • Film released in December in 1975 Time Magazine wrote: “Kubrick demonstrates singularity of vision, mature mastery of his medium, near-reckless courage in asserting through this work a claim to greatness that time alone can—and probably will—confirm.”

  12. Christopher Null, national filmcritic wrote: “Stanley Kubrick's minor masterpiece is often overlooked -- even scorned -- by those who claim it to be pretentious and slow. Well, it is pretentious and slow, but it's still an exceptional film.”

Plot • Film set around time of 1760 • Father of irish boy, Redmund Barry, was killed in duel over some horses • Film starts with Redmund at the age of 17 and in love with his cousin • Challenges adversary to a duel and must flee after winning • He joins the army and is reunited with his friend Captain Potzdorf

  14. Fights in Germany and deserts his company after Captain Potzdorf is killed • Travels through Germany disguised as a messenger • Is unmasked and must serve in the Prussian army • Receives assignment from police to expose the Chevalier de Balibari → Irish double agent

  15. Develops liking for Chevalier and starts working for him • Spend several years travelling from one aristocrat to another doing fraudulent gambling • Meets Lady Lyndon, falls for her, and marries her after her husband’s death

Leads an exlusive life-style • Has a son with Lady Lyndon • Mistreats stepson, Lord Bullingdon (beatings, spends family fortune..) • Stepson mocks stepfather, Barry Lyndon, → is beaten up in front of aristocracy; stepson leaves for his home • Son, at age of 8, dies after falling off his horse

  17. Lord Bullingdon returns and challenges Barry Lyndon to a duel • Lyndon is shot in the leg and it must be amputated • Dies alone and poor in Ireland
