Introduction to the ECE Department • Cal Poly Pomona’s ECE Department is one of the largest in the United States. • The Engineering Accreditation Commission of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) accredits our Electrical Engineering and Computer Engineering degrees. • There are about 1,100 undergraduate and 100 active graduate students in our department.
Introduction to the ECE Department • In our department we have: • 18 full-time faculty • 17 part-time faculty • 5 staff • The University’s motto is “Learn by doing.” To meet this goal we have 20 laboratory rooms in our department. Two of our computer labs provide open access time where students may access department related software. • We offer relatively small class sizes and most lectures have accompanying lab classes for hands on instruction.
Introduction to the ECE Department • All laboratory courses are taught by professors. • We offer year-round operation ( 3 quarters + summer quarter subject to budget), with most required major courses taught every quarter. • It is mandatory for our students to see their academic advisor during the winter quarter for annual advising.
Introduction to the ECE Department • Our B.S. in Electrical Engineering provides undergraduate students with a strong core and an opportunity for specialization at the junior and senior levels by choosing from one of many areas of specialization. We offer courses in the following areas: • Microelectronics • Communications and Digital Signal Processing • Control and Robotics • Instrumentation and Biomedical Engineering • Power Systems • Illumination Engineering • Radio Frequency Engineering • Digital Systems
Introduction to ECE Department • Our B.S. in Computer Engineering educates undergraduate students in the fundamental principles of electrical engineering and design of computer hardware and software. We offer courses in the following areas: • Programming including Object Oriented Programming Languages, such as C++ , MATLAB and Java • Digital Signal Processing • Computer Architecture • Computer Networking • FPGA Design using Verilog HDL • Operating Systems • Software Engineering • Digital Electronics
Recent Team Senior Projects • Multi-Touch Screen Using FTIR (Frustrated Total Internal Reflection) • RF Compass Using Microcontrollers & Wireless Technology • Foam Falcon UAV • All Wheel Differential Drive Autonomous Rover • Helping Hand Robot • GPS Controlled Autonomous Rover • Systems Engineering an Adaptive Modulation OFDM System • Micromouse • Goalie for Soccer Robot • FPGA-Based Digital Media Server • Hybrid Identification Synthesizing RFID and Biometrics • Design of a Low Power Oxygen Sensor
Student Clubs • National Professional Organizations • Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineering (IEEE) • International Society of Automation (ISA) • Society of Women Engineers (SWE) • National Honor Societies • Eta Kappa Nu – The Electrical and Computer Engineers’ Honor Society • Tau Beta Pi – All College Honor Society
ECE Curriculum • Electrical Engineering Major • Core Courses 98 qtr. units • Support and Direct Electives 32 qtr. units • General Education 68 qtr. Units • Computer Engineering Major • Core Courses 88 qtr. units • Support and Direct Electives 42 qtr. units • General Education 68 qtr. units Total units for either major is 198 qtr. units. On the average, our students take 5 years to complete the program.
ECE Curriculum Advice: Take one math class per quarter
Mathematics and English Placement Tests • English Placement Test (EPT) • Entry Level Mathematics Exam (ELM) Unless exempt you need to take one or both of these tests. Take them as soon as possible if you plan on enrolling in Mathematics and/or English in the fall quarter.
English Placement Test (EPT)Goal: English 104 or English 102 • EPT ScoreCourse Placement 151+ English 104 147-150 English 104 & 002 142-146 English 96 <142 English 95 • English as a Second Language 147+ English 102 130-146 English 99 <130 English 98
Exemptions to the EPT • A score of 550 or above on the verbal section of the College Board SAT I: Reasoning Test. • A score of 680 or above on the College Board SAT II: Writing Test • A score of 24 or above on the Enhanced ACT English Test. • A score of 3, 4 or 5 on either the Language and Composition or the Literature and Composition Examination of the College Board Advance Placement Program (AP Credit). • Transfer students who have completed a CSU college course that satisfies the English Composition a requirement with a C or better based upon the requirements from the college they are currently attending.
Entry-Level Mathematics (ELM) The CSU Entry-Level Mathematics examination must be taken and scores received by all nonexempt undergraduates prior to enrollment in any mathematics course. Exemptions: • A score of 550 or above on the mathematics section of either the College Board SAT or SAT 1: Reasoning Test • A score of 550 or above on Level I, 1C, II or IIC of either the College Board Mathematics Achievement test of SAT II: Mathematics Test. • A score of 23 or above on the ACT Mathematics Test. • A score of 3 or above on the College Board Advanced Placement Mathematics Examination (Calculus AB or BC or Statistics Examination (AP Credit) Exception from the ELM Test DOES NOT exempt you from taking the MDPT!
Mathematics Diagnostic Placement Test (MDPT) • If you are exempt from the ELM, then you are required to take the MDPT unless you meet one of the following conditions: • Met the prerequisites for MAT 114 or higher within two quarters of entering Cal Poly Pomona OR • Are a first-time freshman who scored 3 or higher on the College Board Advanced Placement (AP) Examination Credit test in either Calculus AB or BC. Sign up for the MDPT (watch for an email telling you how, or contact the Math Dept.). MAT 114 or above is your goal!
MDPT Preparation • Prepare for the MDPT. Do not take it cold! • A poor score on the MDPT will set you back several quarters.
Student Orientation Services (SOS) • ATTEND THE UNIVERSITY’S MANDATORY STUDENT ORIENTATION THIS SUMMER! • You will receive your MDPT scores and academic advising and priorityregistration for your fall classes!
How do I do well in the Electrical & Computer Engineering Department? • Study Hard! Two to three hours of study for each class hour. • Pace yourself • Take no more than 12 units your first quarter. • Take no more than 16 units per quarter if you do not work/ take fewer units if you work. • Take one or two courses in the summer quarter. • Continue to work hard.
