Lake Como Considered Class III (Low Hazard) Dam by NJDEP Owned by Belmar, Spring Lake & Monmouth County • Lake is owned by three separate Boroughs. ( 30 Acres)
Historical Flooding • Watershed Driven (rainfall events) • Coastal Storm Surge (Super Storm Sandy) Outlet plugged Influent kept comingbut had nowhere to go
Hydraulics/Hydrology (the science) Peak Inflow 2 yr = 1145 cfs (3 in) 10 yr = 2186 cfs (5.4 in) 25 yr = 2873 cfs (6.7 in) 100 yr = 4191 cfs (9.2 in) "One-hundred-year storm" means the storm which is estimated to have a one percent chance, or one chance in 100, of being equaled or exceeded in one year.
(the science) cont’d Tidal Influence Pond storage capable of handling a 10 yr storm event (5.4 in) Peak Outflow approx. 40 cfs (when submerged)
Lake Como’s Effect on SMRSA • Twopump stations devastated (Lake Como & Pitney Ave) • Loss of Service for seven days • $ 2.88 million in damages (Sandy) • $ .963 million in damages over past seven years (LC PS) • and….. Temp Emergency Measures • 80 MGD pump system(123.79 cfs) since removed • Temp PVC outfall line (40 cfs) • Four 18” DIP pump discharge lines installed beneath Ocean Ave
Moving ForwardProtecting Infrastructure/Residents • SMRSA – Lake Como PS Relocation Pitney Ave PS Mobile Enclosure • “Lake Como” – Issues - Stakeholders/Ownership? - Regulatory? - Level of resiliency? - Funding? - Temp. Planning/ Future Schedule?
