  4. Language Arts • On a weekly basis, my regular students read at least one story in class, have a vocabulary quiz, and an assessment based on that story. • For home-learning, I require that the students read a story from the same genre that we are reading that week in class. • Vocabulary Flashcards are available online using: Vocabulary Center at ClassZone.com • To study for the weekly assessment, the students can not only reread the story which is available through ClassZone’s Online Book, but they can also use the Graphic Organizers which are explored during the class reading. • On a quarterly basis, my advanced students complete a Unit of SpringBoard which includes both activities and Embedded Assessments. • At home, you can help them by editing their writings including Quickwrites, Writing Prompt Responses, and the actual Embedded Assessments which are in an essay format. • During the second half of the school year, the class will incorporate the novel, Holes by Louis Sachar.

  5. Textbooks Advanced Classes: • The SpringBoard textbook drives our curriculum. • The students have their own textbook. • To access the online book, the students should have set up their account at: www.springboard.collegeboard.com. 8. Mathematics Binder • First Thing First: ORGANIZATION Your child should have a 3 ring binder (with 5 dividers) and an composition notebook for computer based programs The binder should be set up as follow: 1) Class Requirements 2) Warm Ups 3) Vocabulary 4) Daily Activities 5) Paper (including grid paper)/FCAT

  9. Mathematics Binder • Class Requirements:is where they keep their syllabus, website log in information, and any other handouts I ask to be placed in that section. • Warm Up:This is the section they will be working out their bell ringer problems to get them into the learning mode. • Vocabulary: Word, definition, and an example. They are allowed to write multiple words on a page. (The words, for the most part, can be defined from the online Text Book my.hrw.com) **** Might want to buy your child a hole puncher so they can easily punch holes into their papers if needed***

  10. Mathematics Binder • Daily Activities: is where the bulk of the binder is at. Every time you child enters my room, the agenda for the day is on the board. Your child has about 5 to 10 min to copy the days agenda and to complete the warm-up. The agenda consists of copying the Essential Question (reflection question which from now on they will be able to answer them on Edmodo), the agenda for the day (what we are doing in class that day), vocabulary for the week, and the Home Learning assignment for that day. Right after they copy that, we start reviewing the warm-up, previous Home Learning assignment, and start our new lesson. Behind the cover sheet for the day, they should have that day’s notes, classwork, and the Home Learning assignment for that night. The next day they walk into my class, they have the same routine all over again. • FCAT/Paper: Any math handouts geared towards FCAT style questions and assessments will go here including Crunch Time packets when given.

  11. Mathematics Home Learning • The Purpose of home learning is for your child to review the skills taught in class. Yes, your child has two days to do home learning assignment, but I suggest they do home learning the night it is assigned. Like that it is fresh in their heads and if needed they can come by the next day and ask a question about the assignment. They should refer to notes they took in class when doing their home learning. They can even refer to slides used in class on my.hrw.com. • FCAT is ALL word problems!! Have your child try their hardest to complete the Apply It section of their home learning sheets.

  12. Math Home Learning Websites and Recourses • http://my.hrw.com/Online textbook with tutorials, power points, and tons of online practice and resources you can use with your child. (EVEN BOOK ONLINE IN SPANISH) • www.explorelearning.com/ These Gizmos are assigned depending on skills taught in class. When assigned, the worksheet that accompanies the Gizmo must be turned in when provided along with submitting the Gizmo quiz result electronically. Gizmos, when assigned, will be due on Mondays for a grade. • http://www.edmodo.com/Edmodo is like Facebook but safer. Students can interact with fellow classmates, ask other students questions about home learning assignments, find what home learning they missed if absent, and even answer online quizzes I can assign on there. Students should check this site at least once or twice a day to see if any updates have been made. Parents can also sign up to Edmodo and view what I assign and post. Ask your child to log on to their EDMODO account and on the left bottom corner, you should see your parent code to register.

  13. Aleks • http://www.aleks.com/Aleks is a MANDATORY online computer based program that is differentiated and catered to your child’s needs. It finds where your child is at, works on skills he or she may need, and builds upon them. Students are required to do a total of 200 min on Aleksbiweekly and master at least 12 sessions biweekly. (100 min a week and 6 sessions a week mastered). This will be a BIWEEKLY GRADE!! I will print out their biweekly results EVERY OTHER MONDAY with a start schedule on Edmodo and due dates. (SO IF THEY SAY THEY DON’T HAVE HOME LEARNING….. THEY ALWAYS DO!! ) • www.khanacademy.org and www.sumdog.com can be additional resources available to the students for extra support. • If your child still struggles with knowing their Time Tables, they should also find some time to dedicate to Aleks Quick Tables practice.
