Consortia Services for Publishers: The ALPSP Learned Journal Collection
What is the ALJC(ALPSP Learned Journals Collection)? And ALPSP? • ALJC – a collection of 557 journals from smaller ALPSP members, sold by Swets as a single package (single umbrella licence, single pricing model) • ALPSP – International trade association for not-for-profit publishers (272 members in 27 countries)
The Collection The 557 ALJC titles from 46 publishers are available both in the full collection and in four discipline-specific packages in the areas of: • medicine & life science (151 titles), • science & technology (138 titles), • arts, humanities & social sciences (260 titles) • law (41 titles)
How did the ALJC come about? • Smaller publishers having a problem selling to consortia – squeezed out by ‘Big Deals’ • Libraries wanted to support high quality, good value journals from smaller publishers • Consultation with members, libraries and those offering similar packages • Report by John Cox • Tender process – 3 year contract between Swets and ALPSP
Swets’ Role • Organising the ALJC • Trial management • Exclusive Sales Agent for the ALJC • Sign the single customer licence agreement – Power of attorney • Customer subscription processing and administration • Publishers’ revenue payments • SwetsWise online content as delivery platform.

ALJC Prices Terms and Conditions • 3-year contract • Value of existing subscriptions MUST be maintained • 5% CAP for E-only – not for print • 5% CAP for ALJC E-Access Fee • Migration to E-only during the license agreement period can be arranged (calendar-year basis only)
