  2. Anticipatory Set What do these symbols mean to you?

  3. Standard • Algebra & Functions 1.2 • Use a letter to represent an unknown number; write and evaluate simple algebraic expressions in one variable by substitution.

  4. Language of the Discipline • Expression: A mathematical phrase or the part of a number sentence that combines numbers; operation signs, and sometimes variables, but does not have an equal sign. • Basically, writing a problem but not solving it!

  5. Lang. of the Disc… • Variable: a letter or symbol that stands for one or more numbers.

  6. Input • Read the problem. • Determine the unknown. • Choose a variable to represent the unknown.

  7. Input • Identify the operations. • Write the expression. • * Re-read the problem to see if the expression matches it!

  8. Modeling • A.J. collected 24 Scholarships last month and some more this month. How many Scholarships did A.J. collect in all? Expression: 24 + S

  9. Modeling • Sarah has 52 cards. She and some friends are playing a game in which each person gets the same number of cards. How many cards does each person get? Expression: 52 f

  10. Modeling • Macy, a collie, doubled her puppy weight when she was 2 weeks old. Then she put on 10 more pounds. How much does Macy weight? Expression: 2 x p + 10

  11. Checking for Understanding • Jacob has 16 trophies and wants to display them evenly on his shelves. How many trophies will Jacob have on each shelf? Expression: 16 s

  12. C4U • Sophia caught 3 times as many fish as her dad. If her dad caught f fish, how many fish did Sophie catch? Expression: 3 x f

  13. C4U • Megan has 14 magazines and gives some away to her friends. How many magazines does Megan have left? Expression: 14 - m
