To compare and contrast: • Step #1: Read and ask yourself “What topics are being discussed?” • Step #2: Ask yourself “Are there details for both the same and different?” • Step #3: Think about what you know already. • Look for these signal words: • Compare: same, both, too, also, in addition • Contrast: but, rather than, however, unlike, instead Follow these steps!

  5. Today you will be taking a Compare and Contrast Quiz • about Old New York and Modern New York .

  6. Old New York • Since the times of the Native Americans, New York has been a populous city (having lots of people). Because New York is right on the ocean, it was a popular place for ships to dock and for immigrants to settle.

  7. Modern New York • Today, modern New York is one of the biggest and most populated cities in the United States. This city is known the world over for its amazing museums, shopping and skyscrapers.

  8. Now, let’s read the article “Old New York”. • Here are some questions to think about: • Paragraph 1: What is similar about old New York and New York City today? How is the way boys and girls dressed then different from the way they dress now? • Paragraph 2: In what ways was life in a tenement different from life in a mansion? • Paragraph 3: How was transportation in old New York different from transportation in New York today? • Paragraph 4: What activities can New Yorkers do today that they could not do 100 years ago?
