Other Information…THE FLAG • Symbolizes the Kingdom's roots in the Great Arab Revolt of 1916 • Black, white and green bands represent the Arab Abbasid, Umayyad and Fatimid dynasties • Crimson triangle joining the bands represents the Hashemite dynasty. • Seven-pointed Islamic star set in the center of the crimson triangle represents the unity of Arab peoples in Jordan."

Other Information…COAT OF ARMS • The crown = system of monarchy. • The sash = Hashemite throne. • Scarletrepresents sacrifice, while the whiteinner background symbolizes purity. • The two flags are the flags of the Great Arab Revolt. • The eagle = power, might and loftiness. • Bluecolor of the globe symbolizes the spread of Islam across the world. • The bronze shield = defense of truth and right in the world. • Below the shield to the left are three branches of wheat, and to the right is a palm branch. Stretching down from between the wheat and palm branches is the highest Jordanian medal, the decorative order of al-Nahda.

  6. Things To Know Before Traveling… • A passport and visa are required. • MUST have visa prior to arrival. • To stay more than 30 days, must register with Jordanian police. • The threat of terrorism remains high. • Anti-American sentiments exist in Jordan.

Making Appointments… • Typical business hours are from 9AM to 7PM on Sunday through Thursday • Being on time is admired • Arriving too early makes Jordanians feel uncomfortable and caught off guard • Leave appointments when you feel business is finished • If tea or coffee is being served, let everyone finish before leaving

  9. Business Dress… • Business dress should be moderate and conservative • For men – a suit and tie or dress shirt and pants • For women – a dress, hemline covering the knees, sleeves should be close to the wrist

Addressing Others… • Ya Sidi(yah see dee) – most general title of respect • Ya Ammo(yah um mow) – informal general title of respect • Ya Bek(yah bake) – used for police and military officers • Ya Doctor(yah doc tour) – formal title of respect to ascribe learning and general social awareness • SOCIAL: Mr., Miss, Mrs. Ms. • EDUCATIONAL: Dr., Engineer, Lawyer, Professor • RELIGION: Bishop, Minister

  12. Acceptable Behavior… Married men and women do not touch in public Loud voices are considered unacceptable Jordanians are very demonstrative and very conservative Quiet voices are a sign of maturity and respect Slapping hands is a kind of cheer Jokes are loved

Gift Giving… • Gift giving should be reciprocal • In formal settings, giving gifts is a powerful way of honoring • Anniversary – give sweets • Sick – sweets or a plant • Marriage – house wares or cash • Childbirth – clothes or cash • Rarely exceed 40 USD • AVOID – giving gifts to a business partner’s spouse or a gift large enough to be considered economic aid

Negotiating… • Jordanians are primarily oral and visual communicators. • Jordanians think proverbially. • Bring a supply of standard size business cards, preferably in color. • Have brochures in full color, on glossy paper. • May bring your own lawyer • A verbal agreement is a statement of intent • Integrity is of utmost importance, casting doubt is a weapon of mass destruction

  15. Entertaining… Lunch: 3:00pm – main meal Breakfast: 11:00am or 12 noon Morning Coffee: sweet, thick coffee w/bread at 10:00am Evening Meal: 8:00pm, or as late as 10:00pm. Usually eaten at home. For evening entertaining consider a specialty restaurant. Business lunches should be held at expensive hotel restaurants. An invitation is not rejected until it is declined 3 times. An invitation is not accepted until it is made 3 times.

  17. Position Statement Should the United States conduct business with this country? • The United States SHOULD conduct business with Jordan because Jordan is politically and economically stable; and they are rich in natural resources.

  20. Conclusion… • In conclusion, though Jordan conducts business similarly to that of the United States of America, the anti-American sentiments of Jordan would not make it a country that we would likely conduct business in.
