  3. What happened to him? • On Feb. 24, 2011 Sigma Alpha Epsilon freshmen members allegedly kidnapped Desdunes, blindfolded him, bound his hands and feet, and forced him to drink so much alcohol that he passed out and died. • He was pronounced dead on Feb. 25, 2011. • Desdunes' blood alcohol level was .409, which is more than five times the legal limit. • Instead of being taken to a hospital, he was allegedly taken to the fraternity house while still bound, and left on a couch in the library. http://www.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://www.drugfree.org/wp-content/uploads/2010/09/alcohol1-300x267.jpg&imgrefurl=http://www.drugfree.org/drug-guide/alcohol&h=267&w=300&sz=23&tbnid=jK2qCMsaD1Hj7M:&tbnh=90&tbnw=101&zoom=1&docid=0ssPSvwts8OTbM&hl=en&sa=X&ei=G49wT7jIKo2n0AHMuL3dBg&sqi=2&ved=0CDcQ9QEwAA&dur=3356 http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-JahaCwuJX8c/TgtVmOcgJSI/AAAAAAAAAF0/AtBJDWru1Bo/s1600/sigma-alpha-epsilon-fraternity-house.jpg

  4. Desdunes and his mother • Desdunes’ mother, Marie Lourdes Andre sued SAE fraternity for $25 million in the wrongful death of her only son. • Andre said in her lawsuit that her son hoped to be a doctor, and was a former altar boy who played varsity soccer and the trumpet. • She said in a statement, "With the death of my son, I find some comfort in knowing that this lawsuit may bring about changes in fraternities that will prevent other families from suffering as I have." http://abcnews.go.com/US/cornell-hazing-victims-family-files-25-million-lawsuit/story?id=13948311

  5. Media Coverage Desdunes’ case received media coverage from: • The Cornell Daily Sun • ABC news • CBS news • SAE’s website • Huffington Post • New York Times • Yahoo news • And many other news networks http://www.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://gfisken.files.wordpress.com/2011/09/abc-logo1.jpg&imgrefurl=http://gfisken.wordpress.com/2011/09/18/b-link-and-youll-miss-it/&usg=__s2B1PpHI0X5WBT3nSoevVZ3LU9Y=&h=533&w=800&sz=85&hl=en&start=3&zoom=1&tbnid=nkgub73Qx63LWM:&tbnh=95&tbnw=143&ei=buFxT7PUHsrEtweB6ZHKDw&prev=/search%3Fq%3DABC%2Bnews%2Bimages%26um%3D1%26hl%3Den%26sa%3DN%26gbv%3D2%26tbm%3Disch%26prmd%3Divns&um=1&itbs=1 http://www.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://softsupplier.com/wp-content/plugins/jobber-import-articles/photos/122612-yahoo-hires-new-chief-executive.jpg&imgrefurl=http://softsupplier.com/yahoo-hires-new-chief-executive-115078/&usg=__jkBJhY60E8eZ9G0S0U6HSi8vfzE=&h=350&w=394&sz=11&hl=en&start=2&zoom=1&tbnid=lwJy-gt-KuvFbM:&tbnh=110&tbnw=124&ei=ruFxT-TqMIWgtwfSpeDADw&prev=/images%3Fq%3Dyahoo%2Bimages%26um%3D1%26hl%3Den%26gbv%3D2%26tbm%3Disch%26prmd%3Divns&um=1&itbs=1

  6. What lessons can be learned? 1. On March 1, the University temporarily suspended SAE after an investigation revealed that alcohol involved in Desdunes’ death likely constituted a violation of Cornell’s recognition policy for fraternities 2. Cornell President David Skorton directed the school's Greek chapters to develop a member recruitment system that does not involve students having to perform pledging acts that foster hazing. 3. According to a press release, The SAE national organization closed the Cornell chapter and suspended all its members until they graduate. After graduation, they will become alumni members of SAE. 4. Cornell University quickly responded to this hazing death. FAMU can learn that it is okay to consistently talk about hazing to ensure that another hazing death does not occur at our school. FAMU needs to focus on preventing hazing and repairing the school’s reputation.
