OZONE • Also called TRIOXYGEN, consists of three oxygen atoms (O3) • Pale-blue gas, slightly soluble in water and highly soluble in solvents such as carbon tetrachloride or fluorocarbons • Has a sharp smell resembling chlorine bleach • Exposure can cause headaches, burning eyes, and irritation while breathing • Destructive to organic material !! (lung-tissue)
OZONE in the STRATOSPHERE • Stratosphere: Second layer in our atmosphere; Located 10 km above us; 40 km deep. • Low air pressure, therefore many gases exist in this layer that normally wouldn’t exist in troposphere. Ex. OZONE • Block most of sun’s ultraviolet rays enabling life to survive on Earth. • Acts like a FILTER !!
OZONE CYCLE 1. Fragmentation of oxygen molecules O2(g) 2O(g) 2. Oxygen atoms combine with oxygen molecules to form Ozone. O(g) + O2(g) O3(g) 3. Ozone absorbs UV rays and then decomposes into oxygen atoms and molecules. O3(g) O2(g) + O(g) CYCLE CONTINUES....
Chlorofluorocarbons(try saying it) • First came in the market in 1946. • Contains carbon, chlorine, fluorine • Completely non-toxic, used to replace many flammable and toxic compounds. • Used in air conditioning, foams, spray bottles, fire extinguisher, cleaning electronic components, aerosols
CFC cont... • 1970s, two chemists discovered that UV rays fragmented CFC molecules releasing chlorine atoms. • These atoms are very reactive • They attack the ozone molecules and the oxygen atoms, removing them from the cycle. Cl(g) + O3 ClO(g) + O2(g) ClO(g) + O(g) Cl(g) + O2(g)
OZONE DEPLETION • CFCs cause the Ozone layer to gradually ware off • This layer is non-renewable. • Allows UV rays to reach the surface. • Harmful to living kind. • Not exactly a hole... BUT a problem nevertheless !!
Relation to DALTON’s LAW • Sum of individual pressure of all the gases that make up a mixture equal to the total pressure. • The partial pressure of the ozone and the nitrogen in the atmosphere is equal to the total pressure.
