  2. Buddhist and Suffering Learning outcomes: • All will be able to recall some Buddhist beliefs about suffering; • Most will explain how Buddhist beliefs about suffering affect the way they should live their lives; • Some will evaluate how these beliefs compare and contrast with their own.

  3. Buddhism and Suffering Watch this clip and answer the following questions: • What are Buddhist views about suffering? • Note down which four people SiddhartaGotama saw and what did they make him realise.

  4. The Four Noble Truths Listen to the following rap and write down what you think the Four Noble Truths are…

  5. The First Noble Truth • There will always be some sort of suffering in life.

  6. The Second Noble Truth • Suffering is caused by greed, by wanting more and more things. This brings unhappiness as things are always changing.

  7. The Third Noble Truth • Accept that things change. Treasure each moment, living the best way you can. If you live a life in a way that is good and helps others, you will be happy.

  8. The Fourth Noble Truth • Follow the advice given by the Noble Eightfold Path. This sets out Buddha’s guidance on the way to live so that you are at peace with yourself and with the world.

  9. The Four Noble Truths In your group, find a way of showing your understanding of the Four Noble Truths, and their impact on the lives of Buddhists, in a creative way. This can be done by: • Writing a poem/a rap/a song; • Writing a script for a mini play (and possibly perform it!); • Writing a short story. Think about: What behaviours should Buddhists avoid? What behaviours would be encouraged?
