The point of a gesture drawing is not so much to capture the whole subject as it is to show its essence. Gesture drawings are usually done in a very short amount of time, usually in minutes or even seconds. • In that amount of time, the drawer should focus on putting down the action or the general shape of the subject instead of drawing in the contour (aka the specific shapes and detailed outline).
The line of action is a very useful tool in making a gesture drawing. It shows the direction, angle and position of the pose of the subject. After the line is put down, the rest of the figure can be built off of it.
It’s usually a good idea to use a curved line of action in your gestures to better emphasize the motion of the subject. Doing this allows you to make a more emotional, active sketch, and it makes room for all sorts of diverse poses.
Simplicity, simplicity, simplicity! That’s the key to a good gesture drawing, one that fulfills the purpose of showing off action and movement. The more detailed you are, the less concise you’ll be, and the more time it’ll take the viewer to determine the extent of the pose. You can even draw something as simple as a stick figure if you want, whatever’s best and fastest for you.
Here’s some great sites to practice your gesture skills at: • http://www.posemaniacs.com/ • This site has a great deal of poses to reference from, and there’s a timer where you can set the amount of time the pose stays on the screen for. • http://artists.pixelovely.com/practice-tools/figure-drawing/ • This one’s also good. You can choose from clothed models and nude models as opposed to the last site, and you can choose to do a regular session, with poses back to back, or a class-like session, where you get to take a break every couple of minutes. • There are other sites out there too, so search around and pick the one that’s best for you!
