Objectives & CCSS • Introduce staff to the basic functions in Excel • At the end of this training you will be familiar with: • Enter cell data • Edit and format cells • Use tabs & basic ribbon functions • Create new worksheets • Sort data • Practice creating graphs CCSS.MP5 Use appropriate tools strategically

  3. Enter Cell Data The amount of data you choose to enter into Excel can range from a few cells to thousands of cells. To enter your data, simply select the cell you want and type it in.

  5. Sorting Data Highlight the area that you would like to sort. Select the Data tab and click the Sort button. A dialog box will pop up. Select the row that you would like to sort and click OK. 2 1 3

  6. Create a Chart 2 Highlight the data using your cursor. Click on the Insert tab. Select the type of chart you would like to use to display your data. 3 1

  7. Format a Chart Most of the time Excel will auto-format your data into the appropriate chart. To enhance your chart, use the Chart Tools area.

Creating a Worksheet • A workbook is a file that contains one or more worksheets that you can use to organize various kinds of related information. • A worksheet is the primary document that you use in Excel to store and work with data (also called a spreadsheet). A worksheet consists of cells that are organized into columns and rows; a worksheet is always stored in a workbook. 1 3 2

  10. Application – Classroom Use • Have student collect data, input it into Excel, create a table or graph. The graph can then be pasted into a PowerPoint presentation! • Students can input spelling words and sort them alphabetically • Student can use the border functions to demonstrate perimeter and area understanding • Use functions to calculate descriptive statistics on large data sets
